Chassis No. 761
Engine No. MA 839
Estimate£15,000-17,000
Morgan's first four wheel, with a four cylinder engine, and known therefore as the 4/4 was introduced in 1936 and was fitted with an 1122cc Coventry Climax engine with o.h. inlet and side exhaust valves giving 34 bhp. A Meadows 4-speed gearbox was fitted, and the car was available initially as a 2 seat and later a 4 seat roadster.
During 1938 the coachbuilt drophead coupe was introduced as a flagship model, incorporating several improvements and styling upgrades-the radiator grille was now slatted as on later models, and attractive 16 inch pressed steel wheels replaced the Roadsters the 17 inch easuleam type of obvious Ford parentage.
The new body style had larger full height doors with sliding glass windows and a bench type seat was fitted. The hood could be opened fully or rolled back at the front in sedamea fashion, and when closed gave a very snug saloon like impression. Performance was not unduly affected; indeed Peter Morgan usually chose a drophead coupe as his mount for contemporary trials and rallies.
A high level of smoothness and quite was demanded by the new more enclosed cockpit, and this was achieved by changing the engine mounts, and fitting a Moss gearbox, the first of the type retained by Morgans for many years.
Only 42 Climax engined coupes were built pre-war (plus 16 standard engined cars) making this an extremely rare model. In 1938 the Coupe cost £236 against a price of £195 for the Roadster.
This is a superb and unusual Morgan very useable in all weathers, and of course eligible for suitable VSCC events and has been in the present engineer owners collection (including several Morgans) for many years now, the car is in regular use and is taxed, has a current MoT certificate and a V5C confirming its 1938 Herefordshire registration.
